Jul. 8th, 2002 01:32 amTonight on the train back from
jenslinky's parental estate in New Jersey, five of us crammed into a corner and Johanna made up a story to read aloud using a discarded Jane magazine as visual illustration. A guy in the vicinity couldn't help but hear and be drawn in, and eventually he said "You're from Illinois, aren't you?" to our friend Stevie sitting across from him. I sink down a little further into Richard Wright's The Outsider (which is really good so far) and the next thing I hear is Stevie -- "Yes, I am."
He gets up to go to the bathroom and Johanna wants to know how the train stranger knew that.
"I hear voices."
"Oh. Inside or outside your head?"
"Outside."
"What are you talking about?" Emily wants to know.
"Well, you could say I'm a medium. I went through a car windshield when I was thirteen."
Stevie comes back and sits down and says "I think you overheard me tell that guy over there I was from Illinois."
Train Stranger:"What, you don't believe me about the voices?"
Stevie: "No. I believe in me!"
