Apr. 30th, 2002 12:38 pmDay Two of attempting to determine purpose and direction in my life:
Day One was spent wandering around Park Slope, peeking into the shuttered door of the McSweeney's Store, buying small plastic animals and a mobile, and making a to-do list of things I fear most.
Last weekend, while at a drunken party, a guy who drinks squid and declaims Dali poems told me that he gets up every morning and the first thing he does is the thing he fears most (which in his case is write), in order to get it out of the way and make him feel like he's accomplished something every day.
So far I have printed out half-hearted cover letters to bring to the unemployment office for a review. It seems that the thing I fear most must be bureaucracy -- my next week will be spent filling out forms and mailing them around in order to restore my drivers' license (stolen January 2001) and passport (stolen January 2002).
I have to have my drivers' license back in order to be legal for Jenslinky's & my SUMMER PILGRIMAGE TO DOLLYWOOD.

McSweeneys, Huh?

Date: 2002-04-30 12:11 pm (UTC)It was kind of like being in a big Joseph Cornell box. I liked it esp. the dioramas, but it all was kind of precious and ironic, you know how they are.

Re: McSweeneys, Huh?
Date: 2002-04-30 01:12 pm (UTC)I would love to come in sometime. What are the hours there? Clearly not Monday afternoons.
Now I have all kinds of questions for you. Who makes the dioramas? Will they tutor me? Can I borrow their glue?
I also have some stories: After the afore-mentioned incident, Jen and I plotted two ways of revenge. One, to reverse-shoplift by bringing in things like half-eaten apples, and surreptitiously depositing them among your merchandise. And two, to make a competing diorama in a box that can be worn around your neck, and standing out front to lure customers into looking at our diorama instead. Of course, we never did either, because Park Slope is far away and difficult to get to from Greenpoint where she lives. Jen is my partner in crime. She is jenslinky on livejournal. She has red hair and likes drinking and making trouble. Yay!
"Precious and Ironic"? More Like "Anal and Douchbaggy"
Date: 2002-04-30 01:45 pm (UTC)The store is open Wednesday thru Sunday 11-7... Although sometimes we close up early (a half hour or so) if it's been a particularly slow day. There are events at the store (lectures, readings, haircuts, etc) every Thursday. Those usually start at... 8? I usually can't make it to those because of my crazy job, though I would love to. I'm usually there on Saturday nights or Sundays. I'm also the diorama guy. I mean, I think them up. Somebody else glues them down, because I am very clumsy and have big hands and I'm not good with adheseives. I usually end up sticking things to desks and tables. And myself. I would love to tutor you, but it could be a little weird; I mean, the fact that we don't know each other or anything is a little strange. I'm game, though!
