Last week I went to the Met to see the Surrealism exhibit and as soon as I walked in a stranger came up to me and gave me a business card and told me to report to a 10:45 a.m. appointment the next morning (a Saturday) because she thought I would be a good model.

Intriguing as this is to a girl like me with no job, I wrote it off as one of those scams where they say you should be a model and then charge you $500 for headshots. Also, how could I be expected to be somewhere at 10:45 am.?! On a Saturday, too. I was tempted to go for the story alone, but slept in happily and missed my "appointment."

I was poking around their Web site to see if they looked legit and found this page -- a day in the life of a model scout -- in the part about working for the agency. This is verbatim, cut and pasted from their page. Perhaps I should offer my services as a writer because I could write a more persuasive "journal entry" tied to a chair and hanging upside down and blindfolded. An "Ascot" for heaven's sake.

"Dear Diary,

I got up early this morning because I wanted to work out. While I was at the health club I met a wonderful woman, with two gorgeous children. I invited them to come to an open call. Boy was the mom excited, she seems very surprised that I thought her kids had a good look for the industry. I was a little late getting out because she made me wait and say hello to her husband when he picked them up.
I then went to the mall to pick up some new shoes. I scouted two teen aged girls dressed in Britney Spears motif. The shoe salesman asked me if he could be a model, I hated to say no to him, but his teeth were terrible so I politely told him no. On the way out I saw a gorgeous Ascot so I picked it up, even though I was running late for lunch.
I then met a friend for lunch at a downtown Bistro. It was so nice that we ate outside, which gave me a chance to scout people as they were walking by. It was "slim pickins" as I only saw a few scout-worthy people.

Since the weather was still nice I decided to put my car top down and wear my scarf as I drove towards the office. I wanted to drop off some paperwork and pick up some cards. While in the office I saw one of the models that I scouted a couple of months ago. She told me she signed with a major agency and will be appearing in a magazine ad in the next month. It was great seeing how excited she was, but embarrassing because she thanked me about ten times in front of my coworkers.

I then went home relaxed watched some TV, and took a light nap. I then got ready to hit a hot new club downtown. There should be a lot of hot people there.

When I got to the club there was a long line, but my friend and I got in right away when I showed the bouncer my scout cards and told him I was a talent scout. In the club I scouted several people before calling it a night and putting away my cards. Having done my duty I was ready to just have fun for the rest of the night since I'd put in such a long day.

If you would like to be a scout and live my lifestyle, maybe scouting is for you. Most times I don't go to clubs, though, since I prefer the beach, parks, the zoo, a sporting event, or some of the places on my secret list of great places-if you're nice I may even share a few of my places with you.

Good luck"
