Oh man. They are prevalent in PDX. they are all grey-haired, approximately 45 years old, and wearing ltos of super bright yellow lycra. Also they tend to be with the bike light that is on the helmet.
Although lately I've thought about getting one because when I look over my shoulder when I'm merging, the wind blows my hair in my face. Hmph.

these things are also very prevalent in academic communities/geek towns (i've seen them on both the east and west coast). pretty much everyone who rides a recumbent bike has the rearview mirror attached to the helmet as well.

I think that's awesome. I had one of those mirrors on my handlebar and it didn't work very well, but I'll bet that would. Is that on the free helmets that they're giving out? Sweet.

it seems like you'd have to retrain yourself to look into the mirror instead of just looking around...and that you'd see more turning your head than in that tiny mirror. maybe?

Well, I was discussing this with someone just today - a mirror is really handy when you're not used to riding in traffic. When you turn to look, it often compromises your steering, and in sporadic traffic like we have here, you can't hear if there's someone behind you all the time, so having peripheral vision behind you is very, very helpful.
