You can buy a name at a place like domainsnext.com for $12 a year.
You dont need to give DNS numbers, the registry company will use their own numbers. DNS can always be changed to your preferred provider after the name is acquired. The trick is BUYING your domain if its available.
Then you build a website to reflect it. Then you need a hosting company like forsite.com
In easier terms, the website is your commercial, you pay someone to film your commercial (build your site) then you have to buy airtime on CBS so people see it, thats what a hosting company does, it puts your commercial on the web for all to see. Thats why you need a hosting company. The rates are not high. You can get good hosting with your own domain email addresses for $15 a month.
I hope this helped.

Thanks for the info. It does clear things up a little. The place I tried to buy it, puresource.com, required that I enter two DNS hostnames in their order form. Weird.

After I sent my remark, I relized I sounded like a moron, you had asked what DNS meant and I didnt address it.

Oh, the hosting company was forsite.net
not .com
