Mar. 5th, 2003 04:08 pmI wish I owned a drill. My house would be much more shelved and lofted.
I just finished reading Bobos in Paradise, by David Brooks, about the confluence of bohemian and bourgeois values. It was ok, except that all the parts about the high-flying economy are now invalid, and also because he seemed to have an endless vat of scorn to draw from in describing people shopping at REI, Restoration Hardware, etc. Not to say that they don't deserve it, but it gets old when the whole book is so mocking. Esp. because he never says what isn't co-opted now -- okay, people buying repro Mission furniture and African artifacts and trying to lead the simple life by buying expensive, well-made things is kind of mockable. But what's better then -- being ostentatious the old way? Donating all your money to charity and living out of plastic tubs? He has a lot of criticism to give but little guidance.
Now I need something else to read, I'm going to www.bookcrossing.com.
p.s. Dolly Parton rocks.
