Today I started my second job (of 3 current), aka the Most Boring Job Ever, as a hostess at a restaurant. I figured hostesses were rolling napkins, joking with co-workers, answering the phone, whatever, as well as standing by the podium handing menus to people.

Psych!

Ok, actually what hostesses do is NOTHING. Not sit, not help out, nothing. I guess what they do is think, doodle little drawings, and wish the hour was over.

It being my first day I'm not sure what the parameters are. I mean, since we all know I am doing nothing, can I read the newspaper? Can I talk on the phone? Can I go outside and come back later? This is all exacerbated by the fact that only about 4 people came in all afternoon. So I wasn't even handing out many menus.

Part of me is like Fuck it, bring in the paper and sit back and get paid. But it's my aunt's restaurant so I don't want to openly shaft them or be disrespectful or whatever. Part of me is like Just Say No To Ridiculousness and stay home and make snacks and pet the cat, man.

My goal is to stay long enough for them to process my first paycheck (2 weeks). Then I will have given it more than a chance and can quit guilt-free. Although I kind of feel that way right now.

Also, the food that the employees eat is CRAZY! It's a Thai/sushi place, so their restaurant food is pretty normal. But the Employee Food is straight up real Chinese business. Like, unidentifiable meat on little round bones in broth with strange vegetables, the only one I recognized being a daikon radish. It's not exactly bad, it's just hardcore. In fact it's kind of tasty. No wonder Chinese people live to be 200.
