Yesterday I saw Ani Difranco on the street by my office. Looking tan with big dreads, talking to some dude.

In my head I was like "Oh hey, I had a poster of you on my wall for like three years and knew all your songs and stuff."

But out loud I didn't even give her the what's-up nod, which I reserve to communicate with Michael Showalter when I see him EVERY DAY at the cafe while I wait for my muffin to get toasted or moseying along on the streets.

whenever i meet someone whose music i listen to.. really listen to i feel compelled to talk to them and i ALWAYS say the worst thing ever.

Ugh. I used to do that. Especially in the small towns I grew up in, it was cool, because you could kind of become friends with them. But like really famous people? I can't do it. It's too weird.

i did it to sleater kinney (at a benefit that i helped to organize where they played for free. unprofessional AND humiliating) mary lou lord and mary prankster. i did it to all of those people.

my worst was meeing suxsie from the basnshees and, after seeing her the night before and admiring her shirt.. and not thinking before I talk... or maybe thinking but saying what I was thinking without thinking.. well anyway I blurted out "your boobs looked greatlast night"
I tend to talk to famous people the same way I would talk to a friend of a friend... and thats just a dumb thing to say to a friendsfriend

i tend to tell them how important they are to me.
and what they mean to me. instead of saying "your music means x" i say " you mean x."

That's awesome. I met Debbie Iforgetherlastname from Bust magazine, and was all tongue-tied, and she was like "Where did you get your glitter eyeliner!!!" And it was so much better.

I like her. I really do. It can be hard to just go up to someone and be all "hi, (whatever)", though. I'd proabably have thrown out a lame ass pick-up line. So it's good that I've never seen her.
