It feels just like old times -- it's Flux Thursday and I'm hiding out in the computer room sneaking a little antisocial time. Coming up the stairs tonight I felt a rush of missing Alice-Mary. It's been about a month since I've been over here and I guess I can still sense her blustering around the corner to tell me about something. I don't know how we've gotten along so far without her to boss us around lovingly and make us go on the roller coaster five more times than we want to.

A girl that lives at Flux got mugged tonight in the same subway station that I came through, about an hour before me. It's always completely deserted (the 36th St. G for you Queens dwellers) and as she was going through the turnstile a guy came up behind her and strangled her until she fell down and hit her head. When she came to he was going through her bag. She started screaming and he took off.

She's fine now, just freaked out. The guy made off with $8 and a credit card which she canceled 10 minutes later. The cops asked where she was from (New Hampshire) and how long she'd been in NYC (2 years) and went "Now you're a real New Yorker." I'll stay a fake New Yorker, thanks.

I bet you can get it online. I hate the idea of always walking around with my finger on the trigger though, you know?

I do tend to carry my cell phone out when I'm walking by myself on dark streets, and it's probably not that much help, but it makes me feel better at least.

Yeah, it never seems like it's going to happen until it does, right? The part that gets me is that the women of Flux don't really have an alternative to going through those stations, or walking about 10 blocks from the 7, and how you can't always have someone with you or not go out at night. They are thinking of taking a self-defense class together.

nice cops!

I saw one in London in a movie theater a long time ago. And I tried to make one out of an old pantyhose dispenser, but it was rusted shut and unpickable.
