labrujahAhaha! I ended up skipping out of work early and speedwalking 15 blocks to the Gershwin Hotel for Phat Mandee's show. It was all I could have hoped for. She and I have known each other for a year or so but I've never seen her sing before. It totally blew me away. Usually I can't pay attention so well at shows but this one I was just floating along, unwilling to go to the bathroom and miss anything even though I had to pee bad.
I sat next to my debonair and talented friend Zeroboy, who got up and did a 23 minute improvised piece about gangsters and jazz bands. The only way I can describe him is by saying he's like a mix of a beatboxer and a mime. Or like Airplane from Police Academy. (ps if you click on that link and scroll down you will see a super secret photo of me as champ with the slot cars crew!)
It was one of those shows where you just want to grab everybody by the face and smooch them for rocking so hard. Katy from Uncle Fucker, the awesomest fiddler, played with the band and they did Will the Circle Be Unbroken, and also there was an amazing coffee cup burlesque show which I think will also be happening Thursday at Starshine Burlesque at Rififi so you should GO. I am going.
AND, it was the drummer's birthday and his mom was there and she sat in on the drums because they are a musical family! AWWWW.
