Last Post about Quintron I swear.
Oct. 10th, 2003 11:07 amQuintron rocks the house. The opening band, Baby Rosebud, was excellent: two girls on drums and the accordiorgan, a rare hybrid of accordion and organ. They play instrumental underwater horrorshow cabaret a la Rasputina but loungey, almost.
And Miss Pussycat's puppet show was very good, about sno cones and alligators and termites who have a rave.
The thing about Quintron is that he sweats and fumbles around and plays the Drum Buddy with one hand and wails on the organ with the other and also plays cymbal and electric kazoo. It comes out a little bit beepy and repetitive sometimes, but they are very good at kicking it up a notch into wild gong-bashing rocking out mode. Miss Pussycat's flat enthusiastic vocals add a lot too. Overall it's just a weird, amazing show.
For some reason, if they came along now instead of years ago, I wouldn't be as into it. But knowing this has been cooking for a long time in its own funky bizarre way makes it very special I think.
I got a Drum Buddy belt buckle so I'm happy. And my great friends Nick and Kyle turned up unbidden and told me stories about staying in 17th-century sunken mansions full of junk in New Orleans.
P.S. Quintron is playing again Saturday night so if anybody isn't going to
artemis's birthday party or the slot car races or one of the other million great things happening that night, you should go. It's at the Mercury Lounge.
