I just got a haircut at Public, the place on Metropolitan & Berry that I've gone to about 3 times over the last 9 months. I go to this one girl who is cool and usually gives kind of shaggy 70s-80s cuts that grow out well. The best thing is that she takes a long time to check the ends and make sure the whole shape is good.

Except this time, she just hacked through it in about 8 minutes and didn't bother to make it even. And then evidently she raised her price from $50 to $65 a cut, apart from the fact that I always tip her 20%, have been a loyal customer (although not a frequent one) for nearly a year, and have sent three friends to her. I mean sure, $65 a cut is still not ridiculous (provided you are a complicated hair girl like myself). But it's just not good business to let your old customers feel like they're getting ripped off, right?

So, greatly disillusioned and feeling like a Blade Runner extra, I'm totally going back to the Beehive next time, in like 5 months when my hair is long enough to get cut again, because now it is so choppy and short it will be forever. Or maybe I will call on one of you beauty schoolers instead.

I always hate my hair right when it's done and come around to it in a few days. So we shall see if this simmering resentment goes anywhere. Also why is it that the day I make an appointment to get a haircut, it always starts looking really good like it doesn't need one? Even if it's been terrible for a month?

If you're really unhappy with the cut she gave you (but have been satisfied in the past) you should go back and let her know. She should fix whatever is bothering you at no cost, if not then boycott her loudly all over town.

You're right, I should give her a chance to pony up with the satisfaction.

If you go, ask for bean. She is totally great. Sometimes they have new hires who are less great.

Ooh -- I had a not so good cut there as well (Public) -- last winter. She was all "I'm thinking of something a-symmetrical," which I agreed to, but then it ended up such that you couldn't tell if it was intentionally asymmetrical or just a fuck-up. and not a fuck-up in a good way.

Good to know that the Beehive is a good place to go. I've had good luck at Mousey Brown (more convenient since I live in GPT, also relatively cheap at $45), but I'm always in serach of the world's most perfect stylist.

I adore Carmen at the Cutting Edge, 9 Prince St (212)966-8813. Everyone I've ever sent there also loves her work.
