Yesterday I saw a woman walking a pit bull and had a sudden flash of realization that people keep pets in order to gratify their need for attention and love. This seems pretty obvious but I'd never thought about it before. I just figured people keep pets because they're fun and cute and because you can. But also they have a need to have something or somebody dependent on them.

I was talking to a friend at the birthday party who is really into his cat. Well, a lot of people, myself included, are really into their cats. And it suddenly seemed like cats are little concubines we keep in our homes to be pretty and get petted (and hunt mice).

it's strange, but i think parents create this sense of comradery with animals when they get the family a pet. i was started off with cats and dogs as a kid, which i think parents do to give you more friends. you talk to them and dress them up and pretend they understand you. so, i think part of the dependence comes from the bond. they enjoy it too i think, it's a little different with cats who go outside rather than something in captivity like fish or birds. i always end up feeling like i've done the wrong thing when i get animals who require a cage.

my cats were all stray kittens, so i'm glad they've had a better life living with me, even if they don't know it. they get to go to the vet if they get sick and always have a warm house & healthy food. and those good for nothings, they don't even have to work!

Yeah -- in NY though, most cats I know never leave the house! So it's kind of weird that that's their entire world. Dogs to a lesser degree, they get to socialize and stuff.

that's an excellent cat analogy. ah, my concubine kitties. i have just one left. she is very needy but she's a good mouser. the other concubine passed (the fearless princess), but i have a lovely portrait of her on my arm.
