This is my favorite holiday season; lots of spook and pumpkin, not so much slush and advertising.

I haven't got a lot to say these days but I am reading with interest and poaching friends lists for more.

I saw the French Connection last night which was excellent, both for the story and for the awesome 70s sideburns and running-in-platforms and bellbottoms scenes.

If anybody can make a hat like this, I will shell out some monies for it (like, $35? Is that reasonable?). In black, kind of loose? with pom poms or small ears?
[livejournal.com profile] lorigami? [livejournal.com profile] pomegranite? They got crochet caps for $85 on this site. I sense that girlshop takes 50% of the price probably. I hate their copywriters. They're all like "When you and the Hunk are lunching in Central Park..." Excuse me while I am barfing and not buying any of your stuff, although some of the designs are good.

That page comes up with a few hats, but you're basically looking at the crocheted cloche hat? is it the one with the doo-da on the side?
I could make that.
you want ears or pom-poms? Or ears with detachable pom-poms?
35 is cool.
let me know
=)
thanks

I'm looking at the helmet hat, with a tie under the chin (that's actually optional, I could live without that, it looks itchy, or just add a ribbon myself). And it has two pom-poms on top with pink inside like ears.

I would love it if it could be made of a thin, stretchy, silky/fuzzy wool -- not too bulky is what I'm getting at. Is there such a thing? I do a little crocheting myself (I gave up knitting because I'm more of an instant gratification person) so I've seen lots of different kinds of wool and it does vary wildly in price like you were talking about a couple days ago. Here in NYC we only have fancy knitting stores -- no Michaels or Joann or anything. If it would help, I could try to run by a store and pick out the wool and send it to you...

And the ears, it could either be like tiny tiny black and pink triangle ears, or small pom poms like they have, what do you think?

I'll wrap a tape measure around my head tonight and send you the measurements tomorrow or Saturday.

Yay!

ah... I was looking at the wrong hat. I'll go back and look for the other one now.
I have some single-ply wool angora yarn that I think would work.

ok... yeah, wrong hat...
that one is knit and I don't knit. I could try to crochet the same hat, but..
It also looks pretty fitted and not being able to see the whole pattern, it might take me too long to figure it out.
I think this is beyond my skills to whip out quickly.
sorry
=/

It's okay -- I'd like to get a book and take a stab at it myself. So maybe I will finally progress beyond scarves with accidentally wavy edges!

oh, and yes, most consignment take 40-60% which is why I don't want to do it. seems like it makes the hat a crazy price. but then, I guess maybe they're selling more hats that way, who knows?

I've seen some of the ridiculous stuff they sell on there for insane prices. Does anyone really buy that stuff? If you can tell me with certainty that they do then I'm totally okay with selling a hat for $85. Regarding the hat, it's knitted and I'm not a knitter but I could crochet something pretty similar for you.

yeah, I was going to say the same thing. I was originally looking at the wrong hat, the link first went to the page of hats instead of the individual.
I think this one may be beyond my skills, as it looks pretty fitted, and I don't knit.

are you the girl who was working with WeeT on the bobble hats? I tried looking at your journal but it wouldn't come up.

I am fully ordering the spats. I actually tried to make spats with shitty results about two years ago.

That's encouraging -- I have tried both but I think it took me 3 months to knit a damn scarf and 3 weeks to crochet one. Once I figure out how to make the crochet go in a circle I think I will be all good.

my niece crochets hats and lots of other nice things. they sell her stuff at harriet's alter ego in brooklyn.

here is some info about her:
"mi-Rah-mi is a line of hand crafted, crochet apparel, accessories, and home decor by Samirah Raheem. mi-Rah-mi designs have been featured in Luire (fashion magazine), Tokyo FM (web). mi-Rah-mi accessories have also been featured in the runway shows of designers E-Man and Terence Sharrod, been worn by the likes of Raphael Saadiq, Common, and Eykah Badu, as well as dozens of fashionable folks footin' it in the tri-state area."

she is usually in the store on saturdays for custom orders. but i tell you these things are simply not cheap.
