I'm paranoid about it too. I don't like putting down contact information especially, so I only do it if it's something I really really feel very committed to.
I guess I think it's a way of making you feel like you've done something to help, when maybe you haven't really? I wish there was a clear way to see what the effects of petitions are.
nah. fake name anyway IF i do. i would also like some proof of them Really working. perhaps they do it to make people think about whatever they are petitioning for/about . i supose i think about greenpeace more when they are chasing me down the street every morning in green shirts. or they make me think about alaska. well, they make me think anyway; &arent i bit off subject.
it's kinda a waste to sign them with fake names, because that tends to lead to them being thrown out because of a high percentage of false info. (there's a big controversy about petition signers here) But they do make a difference, leading to potential legislation being put on the ballot, if there's enough signatures. You just have to be careful with the paid people who have like 6 different petitions on one clipboard because sometimes they'll say they're all one thing and some of them are another. I generally don't sign them very often, cuz I don't know what the issue is that I would be signing for. Once in awhile I run into unpaid petitioners who are doing it out of the goodness of their liberal heart and I"ll sign it then.
