Why do they hire gorgeous actresses to play uglier people, then give them latex face makeup? Examples in point are obviously Nicole Kidman in the Hours with her fake nose, and Charlize Theron in Monster.

Why don't they just cast someone who already has a big nose or is fat and has a weird face? There must be good actors out there who fit the profile, and nobody is hiring them to do anything else. It seems unfair. They don't hire ugly actors and then fix them up to look good, do they?

I think Charlize Theron co-produced, so she hired herself?

How would we know? ;D

But seriously, I do agree with you, au naturel.

Because "playing against type" wins oscars!

Nicole Kidman didn't win that oscar because of great acting...she won the oscar because everyone was like "I can't believe that was nicole kidman! It's like she was a whole other person!"

IT'S NOT ACTING...IT'S A PROSTHETIC NOSE!

vanity projects...

i think the short answer to your question is that films like the hours are vanity projects for people like nicole kidman, i.e. a movie that never would've been made unless someone of kidman's caliber financed and produced it. such is the sad reality. however, it speaks well of an actress like kidman: when she throws her weight behind a project, it's about virginia woolf or directed by stanley kubrick.
