First I got George and Delilah on a whim -- two tiny round goldfish in the classic bowl. We moved to Queens and in the course of that they fell off a bookshelf, but miraculously survived. I carried them on my lap in the car, sloshing all the way.

Then Delilah bit it mysteriously, leaving George all alone. This wouldn't do so I obtained a Delilah-look-alike to soothe him. She was obviously an evil plant because two days later it was George floating at the top of the bowl. I shed a few tears and gave him a burial at sea. My friend Ben left a note saying "Sometimes it's just too hard."

The Delilah look-alike (who was named "Tres" the night before) sulked herself to death, first pointing weirdly at the floor of the bowl for a week. I washed out the bowl and observed a proper grieving period.

Today I obtained Ghost and a calico goldfish who is not yet named. Ghost is all-white, very unusual, and has a ripped fin. I caught them myself (my former Petland employee training coming out) and told the fish guy the sad story of the previous three (all from Petland also) while he bagged them. He felt so bad he told me to sneak them into my shopping bag and stood guard while I did it.

So what's a good name for a calico fish?

fish

I like Simon. I have a roommate named Sebastien so that might get confusing. And George 2 will bring back too many memories. I have had to harden my heart against the frailty of teeny goldfish.
