This is mostly for my own reference, but if you know of any weird or quirky hotels or motels (across the country or around the world), will you post it for me?

So far I've got:
Lizzie Borden's B&B
The Madonna Inn
Carleton Arms
Kate Pierson of the B-52's Lazy Meadow in Woodstock NY
An underwater hotel in Fl
Propeller Island Lodge in Berlin
The Ice Hotel (apparently they have them in Canada, Sweden, Alaska, Lapland and of course Iceland.)

I don't necessarily think places with ghosts are weird. A lot of places seem to advertise that they have a ghost just to attract attention.

To the best of my knowledge, we've never had an ice hotel in Alaska.

We do, however, have circle and chena hot springs, and Chena is building the US's first ice hotel next winter. It's a pretty awesome unique hotel even without it, though, and Circle's even weirder. Going from 40 below into an outdoor pool with water around 100 is a pretty weird feeling. Being outdoors in a bathing suit at 40 below is just a weird feeling in general.

other ones I can think of:

the Hotel Sidi Driss - uncle owen's house from Star Wars

Chateaubriand's house is a hotel in St. MalĂ´. It's really pretty awesome.

There is a walled castle hotel in carcassone, france that's pretty freakin cool as well.

This is a great idea. You should get a book deal for it.

I find that Motel 6 can be a fairly frightening place, if properly located.

I stayed at a super-scary motel in West Virginia once, called the General Spottiswood. Mildewy and untouched since 1946, pretty much.

amsterdam

the winston hotel (http://www.winston.nl/) in amsterdam is run by artists, and many of the rooms have been taken over by particular artists and done in fun/weird/pretty themes. it's in the red-light district, so it's pretty loud, but it's cleaner (and more expensive) than some of the other college-tour-hotels in the area.

check out the website, they have a bunch of their rooms up, so you can see what they look like. ive stayed in the startel room, the grip room, and the bridal suite, but they've done a bunch of new rooms since then.

Cool -- I also remember hearing something about a hostel in London which is on a boat on the Thames?

Shady Dell Motel & RV Park - http://www.theshadydell.com/

Caboose Motel - Avoca NY

Red Caboose Motel - Strasburg, PA - www.redcaboosemotel.com

Obviously, I haven't figured out the URL thing yet...

The Shady Dell is a personal favorite of mine - I have been aspiring to travel there for a while.

there're those motels that house each room in an individual fake teepee... i think there're a few along old route 66 in/around williams, az. one of them is called the wigwam motel, i think. or the wigwam something-or-other (inn? hotel?).

I really really wanted to stay in the wigwam hotel and was in fact quite bummed when we got there and it was too late to check in. Boo.
