I still haven't decided about Burning Man yet.
jenslinky helped me figure out the pros & cons.
PROS:
1. I always have fun
2. the theme is good this year (Undersea Creatures!)
3. if I don't go I'll feel like I'm missing it all week.
4. I get to see old friends and meet new people I like.
cons
1. expense (like, to the point that after plane tickets, a ticket in, food, water, gear, I will be left with about one month's rent in the old checking account, if I'm lucky. I do have a job, but I also like not being incredibly broke. This might clinch the whole question for me.)
2. sneaking in/ticket issue -- if I sneak in, I'll save $200 or so, but then I have to not only get a ride from Reno into the desert, but then hike in, borrow a bike and ride in, or persuade someone to drive in (who has probably already got their ticket and doesn't need to sneak.)
4. taking up vacation days (a relatively minor concern)
5. fear/doubt/uncertainty (the hours I will spend trying to get a ride, arrange my water and food to be brought in by friends, etc.)
6. been there, done that. It would be my fourth year. In many ways I feel like I've learned my lesson from it -- it's like when you do a drug a few times, then get tired of it. But every year I get disenchanted and then it redeems itself.
The real question is: how much do I want to go? If I were dead set on it, I could swing it. But I'm just not. Then again, I'm afraid of sitting right here that whole week thinking "Shit, I messed up. I'm missing it all."
brooklyngirl, are you going? What do you think?

Date: 2002-08-13 01:39 pm (UTC)But last year I spent the first few days whining about all the lame moms and dads in RVs and Camp Kidville, and how mean and snobby the Mad Max people are, and then met some really cool punks from Reno and Amsterdam and proceeded to have a great time anyway.
