Aug. 18th, 2002 12:38 pmThis morning I got my thumb stuck in the dishwasher vent. It was terrifying.
Today is Flux Camp Day. We are having three-legged races and other activities (capture the flag, a picnic, etc.) in Corona Park and then adjourning to Flux to watch Wet Hot American Summer, a great film.
When I was a kid, I went to camp two or three times a year, at least. I loved camp -- those first few days when you find your friends, and the quick intimacy you develop. I went to: marine science camp at Myrtle Beach, SC, Space Camp (twice), regular summer camp in Oklahoma, creativity camp, queer film studies camp at Cornell, probably some others I can't remember right now, and the kicker: Surprise Christian Zoo Camp in Paris,TX.
When I was ten, my folks told me to pack my stuff because I was spending a week with Grandma in Dallas. But when we arrived they packed me and my cousin Shawn off to his church where we got on a bus for zoo camp. Undoubtedly my parents thought I would love zoo camp because of my general preference for animals over people. But they didn't realize there would be hymn-singing and Jesus skits and services every night. We never went to church, being the heathen black sheep branch of the family anyway.
So I was suddenly surrounded by kids who were really into Christian rock, whereas I could barely hold a Bible right side up. I thought they were sadly misguided and kind of lame, and they surely thought I was damned.
I did get to pet tigers and wash an elephant and a camel tried to eat my hair. Also I went down a water slide and my bathing suit top came off as I flew into the water and I was mortified.
