Today I purchased a tabletop cotton candy maker and discovered a huge empty old marqueed movie theater about 10 blocks from my house. I am also considering taking a further break from my "career" by going to apply for a job in a small pet store where I can care for baby animals instead of thinking.

Now I am going to make presents for my mom and sister (my sister was born the day before Mother's Day) and dig out my address book and hope against hope that my roller skates arrive in the mail.

An old United Artists one. They must have closed it down and moved to the giant new stadium-seating one a few blocks down the street, the Kaufman-Astoria. The marquee said it was open from 1920-2001. It is a gorgeous huge old building and I wish I could live in it and make it a palace again.

Wow the UA Astoria on Steinway Street? That's an old movie palace. It was split up over the years but the beautiful ceiling and sculptures remained. I saw so many movies there. I had no idea that it had closed. That's sad. There's also another old palace down the road. It was called the Triboro. I forget what's there now. There was also The Strand nearby in Astoria.
On 58th and Roosevelt Avenue is St. Sebastian's Church which years ago was an old movie palace as well. Queens had tons of them! 62nd and Roosevelt was The Deluxe Theater which is now a hardware store I believe. Proudly the old Center theater on 43rd and Queens Blvd still stands although they split that up into 3 screens? They used to have live performances of The Rocky Horror Picture Show every weekend with a full cast performing while the film played behind them. Great old Irish bar next door to the theater PJ Horgans, that was my old stomping grounds years ago. Pints of Guinness with real Irishmen. I could be a 74th street and below Queens tour guide :).

I am going to see Spidahman at the Center theater tonight, as it is a mere 5 or so blocks from mi casa. They have $3 movies all day Tuesday, bless their hearts. It is a bit greasy these days, and the sound bleeds over from the other two screens, but we appreciate it anyway.
I read an article about a movie palace in Harlem that had birds and clouds on the ceiling and stars...

Only $10 at Goodwill, though it is probably clogged with sugar. They are about $30 at Toys R Us, new.
