Dec. 23rd, 2002 11:40 pmMy family and I just went to see Mamma Mia!, yes, the musical with ABBA songs. They are funny in that they like to go see as many plays as possible, based solely on whether they are popular, like collecting trophies of some kind. Afterwards they say "The lighting was nice. The costumes were nice. The acting was good," as if they are actually comparing it to any other show, except that they say the same thing every time. When they visited me in NY, I think they averaged two plays a day.
Also tonight my mother wanted to know "Why we hadn't gone to see this earlier?" Like, they're behind the cutting edge of new theater or something.
You guys already know why it would be terrible, so I won't even go into it. Except for the biggie, which was the painfully obvious demographic marketing. Oh, there's three spunky old friends who don't need men and sing into hair dryers!
I will admit that I like ABBA, though. Not sung by actor/waiters with a pre-recorded chorus, so much.
At intermission I scanned the crowd. Lots of old white people in fancy sweaters. Some closeted gay guys in toned-down leather jackets? Quite a few sporty-looking teenage girls with biceps, you know, like field hockey top-heavy girls. Uncertain-looking dressed-up kids in velvet and hairbows. No interesting people to make eyes at, then try to see where they're sitting.
