My Aunt Jeannette used to always give me the worst presents: WWJD pens on a cord and CDs of Christian rock and an illustrated Bible when I was very little. This is because my parents are heathens who do not attend church (to their credit, we never had to fight about that).

However my other aunt and uncle used to give moderately thoughtful gifts -- stationary sets and stuff. This year they busted out, giving my sister a book and CD by some thinly-disguised Christian rock singer, and me a book of inspirational thoughts for each day (about good Christians)(with twenty bucks inside).

The best ever was a book called Teen Q&A, which had questions like:
Q: Dear Teen Q&A, I've heard about kids my age touching themselves. Is this wrong?
A: You may hear that this is normal. But it is a sin, and wrong. Kids who do it are condemning themselves to hell. If you care about them, you should tell them so.

Basically about as therapeutic as a Jack Chick tract.

Now I know who my sister's been taking gift-giving tips from. Thinly-vieled Christian rock is the best kind.

Yeah, like it's kind of a secret that it's really Christian, and is all slick and marketed. ay-yi.

My grandparents gave me "The Teenage Book of Bible Devotions" for xmas every year from the time I was 12 to the time I was 25. In the past few years, they've realized that I'm (a) not a teenager and (b) that the next time I go to church, it'll probably be for their funerals, so they've abandoned all hope and now send me little first-edition packages of the 50 states quarters fresh from the National Mint.
